Our updated self-employment tax guide is available now

Announcements

Our free publication ‘Self-employment: A LITRG guide’ has recently been updated and is now available to download. It is aimed at those who are self-employed or in a partnership. It will also be very helpful to voluntary sector advisers and other non-tax specialists who advise low-income self-employed individuals.

What the guide covers

Together with the information on the self-employment section of the LITRG website, our downloadable self-employment guide aims to help you understand and deal with your general tax affairs.

The guide includes a detailed case study which shows how to prepare a set of accounts and what information from the accounts needs to be entered on to the 2023/24 tax return.

The guide also highlights what needs to be done throughout the life of a business, including:

  • when starting out as self-employed,
  • things to consider as the business grows, and
  • what happens when the business stops trading.

It discusses all the key tax and National Insurance aspects at each stage, as well as other relevant areas such as taking on staff, registering for VAT and interaction with state benefits.
